On August 21, 2017, Lake Tahoe’s day will miraculously fall to night, revealing the celestial bodies as they sporadically appear in the sky. For a few minutes, the moon will block the sun’s light, turning the heavenly sky into an array of colors amidst the horizon of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. What exactly is this extraordinary event taking place across the nation on August 21st that has so many people talking? Scientists have named this once-in-a-lifetime extraordinaire “The Great American Eclipse”.
Buckingham Luxury Vacation Rentals is here to ensure you make the most out of this spectacular experience while staying in South Lake Tahoe!
This celestial event is known as a solar eclipse, where the moon passes between the sun and Earth, blocking all or part of the sun. The path of The Great American Eclipse will cross 14 states in the U.S., from West to East beginning in Oregon around 9:00am. The duration of the eclipse is estimated to last two hours and 38 minutes. Depending on your location during the eclipse, some may experience totality for two minutes or more! Lake Tahoe will experience approximately 80 percent of The Great American Eclipse, beginning at 9:04am, with maximum visibility at 10:19am, then ending at 11:43am.
Remember, never look directly at the sun without appropriate protection except during totality. Totality occurs when the moon completely covers the disk of the sun. Looking directly at the sun could severely damage your eyes. However, there are many ways to safely view an eclipse of the sun. The most common way to view the solar eclipse is through “solar glasses”. NASA offers several viewing and safety tips on their website for the 2017 solar eclipse.
Buckingham Properties is providing solar viewing glasses for guests who are staying in Lake Tahoe during the epic eclipse.
