Christmas is a time for making memories with your family. For some, that means staying home and inviting over family. For others, it means packing up the ski gear and heading to the mountains! If this is the case, make South Lake Tahoe your holiday destination for Christmas 2016. South Lake Tahoe transforms into a winter wonderland in December, with tree lights, carolers and of course lots of snow. There is something for everyone to enjoy, whether that is on the slopes or off.
Spend Time on the Slopes
If you are spending Christmas in South Lake Tahoe, chances are you (or someone in your family) are a skier or snowboarder. By Christmas, you are guaranteed to have fresh snow on the mountains making for some great riding days. Here is a local secret for all you Christmas vacationers: riding on Christmas Day is a great idea. If you don’t have young children, and can wait to open presents until the afternoon, plan to hit the chairlifts on the 25th when they open. We promise you, there will a lot shorter lines than any other day during your vacation. When spending the holidays in South Lake Tahoe, you have close access to three great ski mountains: Heavenly Mountain Resort, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood Mountain Resort. All offer something slightly different, and each provides a great day on the slopes!
During the holidays, the Heavenly Village is transformed into a winter wonderland. Complete with Santa’s globe and ice sculptures, this festive event is great for the whole family. Heavenly Holidays kicks off on December 22, 2016 and culminates at the New Years Eve celebration. Walk around with your kids, and they can have their face painted and visit with Santa. Parents can head into one of the local restaurants and sip on a hot toddy or hot buttered rum. Or, ask your bartender for their favorite seasonal specialty!
Other Mountain Activities
Even if you do not ski or snowboard, you should still plan on spending your Christmas in South Lake Tahoe. You can even still ride up the Heavenly Gondola with just a sightseeing ticket, instead of a full lift ticket. Mid-way up the gondola, you get hop off at mid-station and take in some of the best views of Lake Tahoe. These spectacular lake views are worth the trip, just don’t forget a camera! At the top of the gondola is the Tamarack Lodge. Out of Tamarack Lodge there is food, beverages, music (maybe even Heavenly’s DJ-Cat). For families, Heavenly has a tubing hill that is open during the winter, and is a great alternative to downhill skiing or snowboarding!
