There is still time to sit with your toes in the sand while laughing the night away to Shakepeare’s The Comedy of Errors! But you only have until August 21, 2016, so choose the night and reserve your tickets in advance.
The Comedy of Errors
The story is about two sets of twin brothers, that were accidentally split up at birth. One set of the twins are slaves to the other set of twins. Antipholus of Syracus and his servant Dromio of Syracus arrive in Ephesus where their twin brothers, Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant Dromio of Ephesus, reside. As assumed in any Shakespearean comedy, the resulting encounter of the unsuspecting twins leads to mistaken identities, false accusations, and lots of laughs for the viewers.
A Little History
The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival began with shows occurring at Sugar Pine Point State Park on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, in 1972. The first season The New Shakespeare Company presented eight performances. For two years they entertained audiences there, until they had to move to Skylandia Park in Tahoe City. But they quickly outgrew the small park and were in need of a new venue. In 1976 Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park agreed to host the performances.
A Theater Like No Other
There is no other place where you can enjoy an experience like this. The theater itself is actually just a stage built on the sand, with audience seating set up on a sand dune. Ladies, you might not want to wear your stilettos to this show! Being on the dune, the audience can see the crystal blue waters of Tahoe beyond the stage. The sun sets during the production, offering viewers beautiful views of Tahoe sunsets. Once the sun goes down, on clear nights the stars come out and you get to watch a Shakespeare play under the Tahoe night sky. Being outdoors and taking place in the evening, the temperatures do cool down significantly so don’t forget to bring extra layers. BetterĀ yet, bring a blanket and snuggle up to your loved one. The theater does have food an beverage stands where you can buy food for dinner. But guests are also allowed to pack their own picnic and enjoy it while watching the show!
Seating
There are many different options for seating at Sand Harbor from cafe tables to relaxing in the sand. The great thing with this theater, is that it is small enough that no matter where you sit you will not be too far from the stage. Starting with the most economical option, is either the Upper Gallery or the Side Gallery. The Side Gallery offers open seating, with chairs already set up and available on a first-come, firs-serve basis. You are allowed coolers, however only small coolers. The Upper Gallery also has open seating with a limited number of chairs set up. In the back is a large open section for those who bring their own chairs, or want to enjoy the show on a blanket instead. This section is not assigned. Moving closer to the stage, is the Lower Gallery assigned seating section. Your cooler must fit between the seats that are already set up. The Cafe Table and Chairs section is down by the stage, and they have tables of different sizes that have wait staff serving the patrons. Coolers are not allowed in this section, and you must be seating by 6:30pm. Front row seats are available in the Premium Seating with assigned seats on Adirondack chairs and wait service. Like the Cafe Tables, guests must be seated by 6:30pm and no coolers are allowed. Dinner drinks and gratuity for the Premium and Cafe Table seats are not included in the ticket price.
