Come up to South Lake Tahoe for Martin Luther King, Jr Weekend! While you and your families spend time together over the upcoming holidays, why don’t you mention a quick three day weekend tip for MLK weekend? By mid January we are all mostly recovered from the holidays, and ready for another trip and more family time. Here are a few things to add to your MLK Day Weekend Itinerary.
Hit the Slopes at Not One – Not Two – But Three Mountains!
Most visitors coming to South Lake Tahoe during this three day weekend, come for the skiing! By this time in the season, the runs are usually covered in glorious snow and you don’t have to worry about dirt and rocks poking through. If you are coming to South Lake Tahoe, you have your choice of a few different ski mountains, all with their own attitude and terrain. As Vail owns three of the local ski mountains, you can get a pass that will work at all three. Why not make it your goal to hit all three during your three day MLK weekend?
Heavenly Mountain Resort
Heavenly’s vibe is all about skiing and riding and then having a great time after you unstrap your boots too. You can ski all morning and then dance around on the snow when you find the DJ-Cat. Yes, Heavenly has a snow cat that they have converted into a moving DJ booth. Usually stationed near Tamarack Lodge, the DJ Cat is a roaming party on the snow! For the more family oriented, ride down the tubing line or the zip line after your legs have hit their skiing limit!
Kirkwood Mountain Resort
If you like steep, off-piste terrain and a more secluded feel, make Kirkwood Mountain yours for a day. Because of where it is situated on the Sierra Crest, this mountain usually gets the most snow out of our South Lake ski hills. Die hard locals and visitors will get up at the crack of dawn on a powder day to drive the thirty minutes out there. But once you strap on your skis, ride to the top and look around you – the drive doesn’t seem so bad.
Northstar California
Only a short 45 minute drive from South Lake Tahoe, Northstar is a great visit for families with kids of all ages. There is abundant terrain for all levels in addition to great post-skiing activities. After a day skiing on the groomed trails with your family, spend your afternoon walking around the Village at Northstar. The shops and restaurants are all centered around a large ice rink in the middle. Let your kids play on the ice rink while you relax on one of the many couches on the perimeter and enjoy a hot toddy.
Enjoy a Five-Star meal with Five-Star Views at The Charthouse Stateline
The Charthouse Restaurant is located halfway up Kingsbury Grade, just minutes from the state line. This restaurant is known for its delectable seafood and fabulous views of Lake Tahoe. Make a reservation, and spend a date night away from the kids and you will not be disappointed. The staff is always exceptional, and the food even better. The menu consists of mainly seafood and steak dishes, with an extensive wine selection for excellent pairings. After dining there once, you will definitely be back for more.
Buckingham’s Favorites:
Appetizer: Shrimp, Crab, Avocado & Mango Stack is just as packed full of deliciousness as the name dictates. If you love seafood, you must try this appetizer!
Dinner: It really is a toss up between the Spiced Ahi and the Filet Mignon. Whichever one you do decide on will be cooked to perfection (or in the case of the Ahi, just seared lightly), an both proteins will melt in your mouth.
Dessert: You MUST try the signature Hot Chocolate Lava Cake. Tell your server at the beginning of the meal, as it takes 30 minutes to prepare. You have our permission to lick the plate (we won’t judge).
Get Your Groove on with Tainted Love
The best 80s cover band from San Francisco to Tahoe is back for another MLK Weekend show! Tainted Love is performing at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe on Saturday January 16, 2016. This is a night to relive the music of the 80s, and a chance to dress up. And who doesn’t need an excuse to dress in 80s fashion? Buy your tickets early, because this show always sells out in advance. Be sure to get your rest before the show, because Tainted Love will have you dancing, and singing from their first song through their third encore!
