It is hard to believe that summer is coming to a close and Fall is fast approaching (and after the snow last night, so is winter). For those of you that got to enjoy South Lake Tahoe this summer, you know that it was one for the record books! We had some fabulous outdoor concerts at Harvey’s Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena, blazing hot temperatures throughout July, a few afternoon thunderstorms (complete with a city-wide blackout) and of course some gorgeous blue-bird ski days. And although the mornings are cooler, we still have one more big weekend before vacation season is over.
If you are in town with us this weekend, here are just a few of the bigger events you can partake in!
The Eagles at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harvey’s
We have had amazing headliners perform at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harvey’s this summer, in culminating this weekend with the ‘History of the Eagles’ tour both Friday and Saturday nights. The Eagles will perform some of their greatest hits that have spanned their long career. This band has sold more than 120 million albums worldwide, earned five #1 U.S singles and six GRAMMY Awards, and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. This is a show you will not want to miss!
Sample the Sierra
Sample the Sierra is back for its 5th year! This event is a true Farm-to-Fork festival with local farmers and chefs collaborating to produce delicious tastings for event goers. The fun begins Friday August 29th with a Pop-Up Dinner at Lake Tahoe Community College. During this kick-off event, guests are treated to dinner and a documentary outside in the college’s Demonstration Garden. Tickets are mandatory for this event, and a portion of the ticket sales will be donated to Let It Grow. Search for Tickets.
On Saturday August 30th, there are three different activities you can enjoy. The Farm-To-Fork Bus Tour takes participants on a field trip to Apple Hill where local producers and wineries will be visited. Tickets are $65/person and include bus ride, lunch, bottle of wine and samples at the various locations.
If you would rather stay in Lake Tahoe, you can join the Sup & Sip event where you can taste Boeger wine at noon and paddle board at 1:30. Tickets are $30 and include an hour of paddling and wine tasting (located at El Dorado Beach).
If you are more artistic, head to Ski Run Marina to the Lake Tahoe Paint & Sip Studio. Here you can enjoy sipping spirits while painting your heart on on a 16 x 20 canvas. The studio provides an artist for guidance if you, and all paints and materials you will need. Tickets are $40 and the event is from 3pm to 5pm.
And finally, there is the main event: Sample the Sierra on Sunday August 31 from 12pm – 3pm at Bijou Community Park. During this festival visitors can walk around booths and enjoy wine tastings, chef’s pairings, local produce, live demonstrations, a Chef Challenge, local artists and of course live music! This is a great way to come out and support the local community and taste some delicious food and wine. A full tasting ticket is $40, and includes 18 tickets to 15 different booths and three extra tickets to vote for your favorite booth. An under 21 tasting ticket is $30.
The Great Lake Tahoe Sternwheeler Race
Have you ever watched two paddle-wheel boats race? Well this weekend is your chance with the Great Lake Tahoe Sternwheeler Race! On Saturday August 30th, watch at the Tahoe Queen and the M.S Dixie II depart the starting line that is set up near the shores of Edgewood. They will race four miles to see which boat will take the overall Tahoe Cup! Tickets to ride either of these unique vessels is $25, and includes a brunch buffet in addition to being part of the action! Call 1-800-23-TAHOE for tickets.
Tahoe Geotourism Expo
This unique event is inspired by our local environment. Participate in over 20 GeoTracks that are spread throughout the Tahoe basin. This is a great way to get out and experience new ways to enjoy Lake Tahoe. Choose from events such as Sunrise SUP Yoga Tour of Sand Harbor, a River Paddle tour of Upper Truckee, Sand Harbor Kayak Tour, Bird Watching Tour of Spooner Lake, Fly Fishing Tour, Photo Tour of Sand Harbor, Mark Twain Tour of Tahoe and so much more! These events are family friendly, and there is something for every age and ability! Check out the Tahoe Expo website for more information and to register for events.
Labor Day Fireworks
Head to your favorite location with a lake view and say goodbye to August with a fireworks extravaganza! The show is on Sunday August 31, and starts around 8:30pm. Like the fireworks during the Fourth of July, this show is always impressive and fun for the whole family! Tune in to local radio stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL-AM 1490 to listen to music that is synched to the show! See this list for some ideas of where to watch the fireworks show!
