Snow making guns at Heavenly

Snow making guns at Heavenly

With Heavenly’s opening day almost here, locals and visitors alike are getting quite excited with anticipation (and to cure that itch of getting up on the hill)!  The resort will be opening for the 2010-2011 winter season on Friday, November 19, 2010.  With the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system, their snowmakers have been working around the clock (with the aid of some recent natural snow) to get the slopes ready; it looks like opening day will be quite the success!  They plan to have the Gondola and Tamarack Express operating which will provide access to Upper CA Trail and Tamarack Return for skiing and riding. They also plan to have a few terrain features set up on CA Trail for those with jibbing fever! For the kiddos, they intend to have the Magic Carpet available for lessons and at the Tubing Hill Area, they intend to have hike-accessed Adult Ski School and Saucer Use available. When you’ve worked up your appetite, you’ll be able to hit the Adventure Peak Grill for some tasty grub!

Turkey

With Thanksgiving dinner less than 2 weeks away, it’s time to start thinking about your menu! If you spending Thanksgiving in Tahoe and are planning on having turkey (and are looking for a special, range grown bird), I would highly recommend pre-ordering your turkey from Overland Meat Co. From the Diestel Turkey Ranch in California, these birds are extremely tender and juicy and have real, old-fashioned turkey flavor. Diestel turkeys are fed a wholesome, low fat, all-American 100% vegetarian diet of US (no imports) corn and soybeans milled on the ranch – free of growth stimulants and hormones.  Call Overland at (530) 544-3204 to pre-order your Tom Turkey today!

Great Autumn Activities at Bijou Community Park

Disc Golf, one of the many activities you can enjoy at Bijou Community Park

Disc Golf, one of the many activities you can enjoy at Bijou Community Park

Centrally located in the heart of South Lake Tahoe is the Bijou Community Park, a great place to enjoy outdoor activities during the spring, summer and fall.  Some of the amenities are:

- One of the top disc golf courses in the country (and it’s free!)
- Two covered gazebos with barbeque pits. Both are available for rental with rates starting at $170.00.
- Skateboard park
- 2 Sandy volleyball courts
- Fitness course
- Restrooms
- Concession facility (during the warmer months)
- Basketball court
- Open meadow; great for walking, biking or just relaxing
- Historic railroad exhibit
- A fenced dog park with a separate area for large and small dogs, it is open to the public

During the spring and autumn seasons, you will find the park a lot less crowded, especially on weekdays.  During the summer months, there are generally more people on any given day of the week (and extremely packed on the weekends).  To beat some of the crowds, you can enjoy late afternoon to early evening activities in the park with the longer days.  The entrance is located on Al Tahoe Boulevard near Johnson Boulevard.  There is ample parking.

Fun Autumn Activities in Apple Hill!

Apple Pie, one of the many delectable treats you can find at Apple Hill!

Apple Pie, one of the many delectable treats you can find at Apple Hill!

During the fall season in Lake Tahoe, our most frequent question is, “What activities do you recommend?”  With cooler temperatures, the outdoor activities can get somewhat limited in Lake Tahoe.  If you are in town for a few days (or longer), approximately one hour away is the legendary Apple Hill which is located near Placerville, CA — old “Hangtown.”  Apple Hill is made up of more than 50 ranches including Christmas tree growers, wineries, a micro-brewery, Spa and vineyards.  Popular for its delicious apples which are harvested there, they also have pumpkins, pies, cakes and restaurants.  The activities for children are almost endless; some of the fun things for kids to do include: a petting farm, pony rides, feed the animals, hay-bale maze, U-Pick pumpkin patch, train rides, educational tours, cooking classes and much more.

Visiting Apple Hill is also a great way to see some of Tahoe’s surrounding scenery; the drive there is very beautiful… and short!  Some places are year round while others are only operational during the autumn months, be sure to check their website for the growers’ days and hours.

Check out a local news clip about Apple Hill from a few weeks ago.
