Kokanee Salmon at Taylor Creek

Kokanee Salmon at Taylor Creek

The 21st Annual Kokanee Salmon Festival is taking place this weekend on October 2nd and 3rd from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the U.S. Forest Service Visitor Center at Taylor Creek, which is 3 miles north of the City of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89 (in between Camp Richardson and Emerald Bay). This is a free event!  Children and their parents are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of educational and entertaining events. Participants can learn about the natural wonders of Taylor Creek and take part in many fun activities, including a delicious salmon barbecue, Kokanee trail runs, children’s activities, educational and streamside programs, and much more!

On Saturday at 2 p.m. (in the amphitheater adjacent to Taylor Creek Vistors’ Center) a free program will be offered by the Forest Service featuring live animals which may include a black bear, bald eagle, barn owl, turkey vulture, a beaver, and snakes. *Because of the live animals on stage, attendees are asked to leave their dogs and other pets at home. Also, new to the festival this year will be a giant 40 foot inflatable fish for children to explore named “Sammy Salmon,” the official mascot of the festival, will make appearances each day!

Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe

Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe

As one of the most photographed spots in the country, Emerald Bay is truly an amazing site to see when visiting Lake Tahoe.  Named for its greenish-colored waters, it is located on the southwest shore of the lake and it is accessible by Highway 89 — beyond Historic Camp Richardson.   Emerald Bay is a state park and is about 1.7 miles long and about two-thirds of a mile wide at its widest part.  Located in the middle of the bay is Fannette Island, Lake Tahoe’s only island with the old “tea house” perched on top.  Fannette Island is accessible by boat and you are allowed to park at the island and hike up to the tea house.  Also in Emerald Bay are Eagle Falls and Vikingsholm, a 38-room mansion that is one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the United States (accessible by both boat and a mile hike down from Highway 89).  If you are driving to Emerald Bay, there is a large vista point with ample parking that offers great views of the bay and its dramatic, surrounding mountains.  If you are boating to Emerald Bay, the mouth of the bay is very interesting as it is extremely shallow (20 feet or so) and boasts the emerald green color quite spectacularly.

In 1969, Emerald Bay was recognized as a National Natural Landmark by the federal Department of the Interior. In 1994, California State Parks included the surrounding water of the bay as a part of the park, making Emerald Bay one of the first underwater parks of its type in the state, protecting the various wrecks and other items on the bay’s bottom.

Sprouts Natural Foods Cafe

Sprouts Natural Foods Cafe

Centrally located in town on the corner of Alameda Avenue and Highway 50 (Lake Tahoe Boulevard) is Sprouts Natural Foods Cafe.  They specialize in healthy foods, some vegetarian, some vegan, some with meat, and they are all delicious.  Offered in hearty portions, their food is very fresh and filling.  They offer a wide range of items: sandwiches, breakfast, bagels, smoothies, homemade soups daily, hot drinks (coffees, teas, espresso drinks and a couple of others), salads and some wonderful specialties.  There is also a kids’ menu a list of extras you can get.  The upbeat attitude and movement of the staff makes for an even more pleasurable experience.  There is dining inside and outside as well as seating at the counter where you can watch the staff whip out culinary delights!  One of my personal favorites is the classic burrito with turkey… and every soup they make!
